They are fully versed and confident in the current range of studio and location cameras and lighting equipment. This may well include a number of film and digital capture methods, and they are generally competent with an understanding of post-production techniques and possibilities. They have generally been in the photography business a number of years after a college education.
They may well have all or most of the same skills as first assistants but they are generally less experienced, and probably do not have such a diverse range of understanding.
Runners -whether for film, TV or photography- are new to the business and should be considered a spare pair of hands.
